Hospital History
Shahid Rajaei Cardiovascular Medical, Research and Educational Center is considered one of the largest heart hospitals in Asia. This hospital began its operations in 1974 with 400 approved beds and 265 active beds. At the time of its opening, the inpatient wards of the hospital included ICU and CCU, Internal East and West, Pediatric East and West, Surgical East and West, Private, and the Royal Ward (currently the Enqelab Ward).
Other active departments of the heart hospital included the Operating Room (2 active rooms), Catheterization and Angiography, Radiology, Central Laboratory, Medical Research Laboratory, Experimental Research Laboratory, Dialysis Unit, Library, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Autopsy, Social Work, and the Nursing School.
Step-by-Step Development from the Beginning to Present
1977: The number of active beds reached 366. In this year, the private ward was divided into 4 sections, and the capacity of the adult ICU and CCU wards was increased to 24 beds.
1980-1986: The Emergency, Nuclear Medicine, Echocardiography, and Dentistry departments were added. The number of beds reached a maximum capacity of 400. In 1986, the Enqelab ward was activated with 16 beds for war-wounded patients, and the Shahid Esmaeili dormitory for residents was established.
1992: Angioplasty was expanded, and the number of beds reached 450. The emergency ward increased from 10 to 21 beds, and the operating rooms increased from 4 to 6 rooms.
1993-1994: Men's Post CCU (33 beds), Adult CCU B (12 beds), Adult ICU B (12 beds), and Pediatric Surgical ICU (12 beds) wards were launched. With these changes, the total number of beds reached 508.
1996: With the opening of the CCU C ward and gradual changes, the number of beds increased to 544 and the number of operating rooms increased to 11. The Pediatric CCU ward was converted into the Pediatric Medical ICU.
1997-1999: Private Ward 2 was repurposed as CCU F. The Echocardiography department added Stress Echo to its services, and the Pacemaker, Risk Factor, and other specialized clinics began their operations.
2000-2001: The Angiography department was equipped with Pacemaker and Electrophysiology (EP) units. The Female Post CCU and sub-specialty clinics such as Pulmonary, Renal, etc., were launched.
2003: The Bu Ali Sina building, containing 53 units for the welfare of married residents, was put into operation.
2004: The CT Scan unit was launched, and the Male and Female surgical wards were equipped with ICU. The Anesthesia clinic also began its operations.
2005-2007: The Adult ICU G ward with 12 beds was launched. The Syncope clinic and sub-specialty clinics such as Vascular, Heart Transplant, etc., were added to the facility. The Cath Lab and EP Lab were expanded, and the total number of beds reached 563.

2008-2009: The total number of beds reached 571. Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, and Peripheral Vascular clinics were launched. In 2009, MRI and CT Scan 256 (the most advanced in the country) were commissioned.
2010: The Shahid Bahonar building was launched with 49 units for married residents, bringing the total number of units to 102.
2011: The Scopy unit, Day Clinic, and New CCU F were inaugurated.
2012: The private wards were repurposed into Diplomat and VIP wards. The country's largest Open Cardiac Surgery ICU (36 beds) and CCU G (28 beds) were inaugurated.
2013: The institute achieved an "Excellent" rating in the national evaluation and attained true institutional independence.
2014: Thalassemia and Heart Transplant clinics were re-added to the facility. Wards were expanded, and active beds reached 615.
2015-2016: Varicose Vein, Diabetic Foot, Sleep Test, and Psychiatric clinics were launched. The number of beds reached 595 and operating rooms reached 13. The Shahid Rajaei Heart Guesthouse was also reopened.
2017: Onco-cardiology and Pediatric Pulmonary clinics were launched. The hospital was equipped with a Force CT scanner (the only one of its kind in the country). The number of beds increased to 599.
2018-2019: Pulmonary Embolism and Nutrition clinics were launched. Following renovations, the number of beds initially decreased to 583, but with the opening of ICU P5 and CCU K wards, the final number of beds reached 602.
2020: The Emergency Department was completely demolished and reconstructed, and PET-Scan was commissioned in the imaging department.
2021-2022: The Pediatric Pulmonary clinic was launched as a separate unit. Pain, Sleep Regulation, and Thoracic Surgery clinics were added, bringing the total number of active beds to 615.
